Meet “Team Valeo”

MIKE LUEPKE, Owner & Head Trainer

I attended Purdue University, where I pursued a degree in Health & Fitness and received a minor in business. As a part of the Purdue Rowing Team and an active participant in intramural sports, I regularly helped my teammates and friends train for the sports in which we competed. At that time, I first began to seriously consider training as a career, became certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine and began training at a local gym in West Lafayette. After school, I moved to Holland, where I met my then-future wife, Jessica. In May of 2009, I teamed up with Valeo / Personal Training and regularly work with athletes, both young and old, weekend warriors, working moms, and those just looking to put a little more “spring in their step.” I pride myself in working with my clients to aggressively reach their fitness goals by developing individualized programming using safe and effective progressions. I love working with my clients and educating them about how they can maintain their fitness.

JESSICA LUEPKE, Owner

I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Hope College, where I studied Kinesiology, majoring in Exercise Science and minoring in Psychology. My years at Hope were highlighted with various achievements, including being recognized on the MIAA Honor Roll of Athletes and receiving AAPHERD’s “Exercise Science Major of the Year” award (2003). I spent a few years post-college working in corporate wellness before pursuing continuing education at the Fitness Institute International and Institute of Human Performance in Boca Raton, Florida. This experience fueled my interest in purposeful, fun and safe program-design based on scientific theories and real-life movement.

After returning to Michigan, I started Valeo / Personal Training and focus each session on improving functional strength, whether in the athletic setting or in everyday life. As a collegiate Track and Field runner, recreational sprint triathlete, adventure-based racer and general-fitness specialist, I know firsthand the importance of smart and effective training and the benefit that strength training adds to any regimen. I strongly believe that our bodies and minds are dependent on exercise; put simply – the Lord made us to move! I’ve worked with a wide-range of ages and abilities and love seeing someone, whether they are brand-new to exercise or a seasoned-athlete, walk away with their head held a little higher from a sense of personal accomplishment.

DERECK CHAVIS, Trainer

Dereck Chavis, originally an Elkhart, Indiana native is the newest Personal Trainer here at Valeo. He first became interested in training and fitness during high school as a three sport athlete. Over the years Dereck has built an extensive base of knowledge in the realm of strength training and conditioning.  In college, he was a captain and All-Conference track and field athlete whom then moved on to coach collegiate track and field for 13 years. Dereck has always been interested in how to help one achieve fitness and performance goals and, in that quest, he earned certifications from the United States Track and Field Association in the Sprints and Distance events, the Cooper Institute as a Fitness Specialist in and the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Although Dereck has an extensive background in competitive athletics, he is eager to help others reach their goals and create a life of wellness and exercise that is applicable to each individual.  Dereck’s motto is to “perform to your ability, stay healthy, enjoy your workout and keep coming back.” When Dereck is not training, you might see him coaching his sons Xavier and Ian or spending time with his wife Llena, daughter Amira or son Dominic. Aside from exercising and coaching, Dereck loves to read, study, and volunteer.
